Background of the Study
Forensic anthropology is pivotal in the investigation of suspected torture cases, where skeletal trauma analysis can reveal patterns of violence and abuse. In Boki Local Government Area, Cross River State, experts utilize detailed osteological assessments to document fractures, stress markers, and other trauma indicators that suggest deliberate infliction of harm (Okon, 2023). Recent advances in imaging and microscopic analyses have enhanced the detection of subtle skeletal injuries, yet challenges remain in differentiating between accidental injuries and those resulting from torture (Udo, 2024). This study examines how forensic anthropology can be effectively deployed in suspected torture cases, emphasizing the need for meticulous documentation and adherence to international forensic standards. By analyzing local case studies and integrating multidisciplinary techniques, the research aims to refine trauma assessment protocols, ensuring that forensic evidence withstands legal scrutiny and contributes to justice for victims (Ekwere, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Boki, the forensic investigation of suspected torture cases is challenged by the difficulty of distinguishing between accidental and deliberate trauma. Limited resources, lack of specialized training, and insufficient standardization in trauma analysis contribute to potential misinterpretations (Ifeanyi, 2023). These shortcomings hinder the ability of forensic experts to provide conclusive evidence in legal contexts, delaying justice for victims. This study seeks to evaluate current forensic methods in analyzing skeletal trauma and to propose targeted improvements to enhance the reliability of findings (Chima, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess current forensic techniques used in skeletal trauma analysis.

  2. To identify challenges in differentiating torture-related injuries.

  3. To propose refined protocols for accurate trauma assessment.

Research Questions:

  1. What forensic methods are used to analyze skeletal trauma in torture cases?

  2. How do current challenges affect the differentiation of trauma types?

  3. What protocol improvements can enhance the accuracy of trauma assessments?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Advanced imaging significantly improves trauma detection.

  2. H₂: Standardized protocols reduce misinterpretation of skeletal injuries.

  3. H₃: Specialized training enhances forensic accuracy in torture cases.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant for strengthening forensic investigations in suspected torture cases by refining trauma analysis protocols. Improved forensic accuracy will contribute to judicial integrity and the protection of human rights, ensuring that evidence withstands legal challenges (Umeh, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to forensic anthropology practices in analyzing skeletal trauma in suspected torture cases in Boki Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on methodological and training challenges.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Skeletal Trauma: Physical injuries to bones resulting from external force.

  2. Torture Cases: Incidents involving deliberate infliction of severe pain or suffering for coercive purposes.

  3. Osteological Assessment: The examination of bones to detect signs of trauma or disease.
